People who call themselves Christians, yet have no self-respect, no respect for others, and do not even live by the Christian beliefs! Just down right irritating! You behave any way you want, treat others any way you want, and think going to church once a week and praying for your sins makes you a Christian?! You need to be slapped into REALITY!

*This is primarily in regards to Tongans who hold these very “moral” beliefs but do not even ACT on it!

You know that saying, “You want what you can’t have?” Yeah, its true. I hate to admit it & I’m NOT proud of it but sometimes I like a guy just cause he’s unavailable. And once he starts showing mutual feelings, I don’t feel anything towards him after! I HATE IT but I can’t help it! I didn’t think this was true until someone pointed out the past relationships I’ve been in and as I thought about it, it dawn on me. I try not to but it’s like I subconsciously do it anyways! Any girls out there who has this problem?

Being half Tongan & half Caucasian, I understood things from two perspectives. ONE: My Tongan family, in which they try to live and uphold their traditional ways in a modern world and TWO: my American family in which they do well for themselves but have no sense of pride or culture. My Dad always tried to convince me that my Mother and her family were trying to live in ways that were extinct. They would be enslaved to the system if they did not become more than just “villagers.” In the beginning, I agreed. I mean, my Mother came to the United States at 20 years old, and seeing how much she’s accomplished says a lot for just a “villager.” I hated my father for belittling my family, but in time I couldn’t deny the fact that there was some truth in what he said.

But as I have spent almost four months with his family, I realized something: I would rather be a “villager” than just another working consumer in this land of money. My mother’s family lives by family and culture, while in my father’s family, they lived by money and family was just a word to them.

This is a shout out to all my Pacific brothers and sisters out there:

Yes times have changed, and we do need to change along with it. But I’ll tell you this as I told my dad: What would be the point of being on top of this money craved society we live in today, if we have nothing else to take pride in? Unlike western societies, we live by our traditions, our families, and our values that make us Pacific islanders. A good life consists of gatherings, dances, prayers, laughter. Our work is the land and the sea. Now consider the life we now have in Western societies (work, bills, violence; the on-going struggle for unnecessary wants), and tell me again why this way (the traditional island type) of life isn’t right.
